I have to admit; when I was a little girl I was kind of a bookworm.
Not the slimy, ugly kind of worm that you impale on a fish hook; more of the cute and cuddly little glow-worm-type that curls up in bed with a good book. (At least, that’s how I pictured myself.)
But, my mom would always yell at me for reading in my room in the dark. She warned me that it could hurt my eyes…but I didn’t believe her.
Well, something my husband knows about me, but not many other people do is; now I’m night-blind. It was a hard lesson to learn, but making decisions in the dark can, sometimes, lead to regrettable consequences.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness…” John 8:12 (NKJV)
God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light to our path. Light illuminates, light guides, light can even warn us of danger ahead.
So many times, God’s wisdom is trying to shine a light on dark situations in our lives, but we just want
- Him to get out of our way!
- We don’t have time.
- We’re having fun right now.
- Things seem ok.
But pride comes before a fall. Maybe when things finally go dark on us, it’s to our advantage, because now we can distinguish the light more clearly.
“You, Lord, are the light that keeps me safe. I am not afraid of anyone. You protect me, and I have no fears.” Psalm 27:1 (CEV)
God wants us to avoid the darkness in the first place. But, how can we acquire the light of life?
We just have to get more Jesus!
