In high school, I thought things were FINALLY starting to go my way. I was a varsity cheerleader. (Kind of my dream, especially for a girl almost six-foot-tall.)

I got to wear the cute outfit and I earned the lead in our high school musical. Things seemed to be going really great for me!

And then, came prom. (OH BOY, did that end up being different than I’d planned!)

A few weeks later, I wasn’t feeling so good and one of my girlfriends told me I should take a pregnancy test.

So I did.

Uh…How do I tell my mom (who I didn’t even live with) that I was PREGNANT?

I decided to invite her to lunch at a public place so she couldn’t really FREAK OUT.

I remember sitting in a booth at that Italian restaurant— over salads— and telling my mom that I was going to have a BABY.

I was just 17 years old.

Her eyes welled up with tears. I don’t know if I thought she would be mad or sad. I mean, the whole thing was just so totally UNEXPECTED.

It wasn’t MY plan — and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t GOD’S plan for my life, either.

Everyone told me to get an abortion — but I just COULDN’T do that. Suddenly, I was fiercely protective over this thing — this baby on the inside of me.

Yes —  I was young and dumb. But, what I found was THIS LOVE that I didn’t even know was possible!

My love for that little boy (who, by the way, has turned into an awesome man) doesn’t even begin to compare with God’s love for YOU and ME!

NOTHING unexpected ever surprises God.
