Recently, I had the privilege of hanging out with the legendary John Maxwell.
John has written more LEADERSHIP books than anyone else in the world.
We were flying from a speaking engagement in Dallas to St. Louis. He was going to shoot a segment for my television show, and then speak at our church.
We chatted the whole flight. When I got home, I immediately began writing down these new concepts.
“Three Important Ingredients You Need if You Want to Be a Great Leader.”
Two of them, you may have heard of. The last one… that was my epiphany moment.
There’s IQ: Your INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT
You’re already smart. But, we don’t want to end up not knowing any more than when we started.
“You have to be a reader to be a leader. When we stop learning, we impede our earning.”
John Maxwell
I know you believe it. That’s why you’re reading blogs like this to sharpen your axe, right now.
And then, there’s EQ: Your EMPATHY QUOTIENT
When I get around John, he always draws the BEST out of me. One of his greatest gifts is making other people feel comfortable.
At the conference, I was asked to give an exhortation and pray for the people. Someone recorded it and posted it on my social media… and it had almost 2 million views! (That’s more than anything I’ve ever posted.)
I know part of it was because John was on the front row, rooting for me and drawing the best out of me. Not intimidating… like, “you have to impress me!” But, totally supportive… like, “you really IMPRESS me!”
It’s true. If you’re around someone who believes in you, you WILL perform better. I can definitely learn to be more like my mentor in this area, for sure!
And here’s my epiphany moment…
Your CQ: CHANGE QUOTIENT
The third thing is another quotient that most folks don’t think about, or even try to measure.
If we’re so sure that we’re RIGHT and our ways are BEST, how will we ever grow and improve beyond that?
We HAVE to:
• Be willing to be CHALLENGED… and to be wrong.
• Be willing to learn, get feedback, adapt, and GROW.
• Be willing to TRY something new that we’re not good at.
• GO!!! We can’t stay HERE… and expect to get THERE.
Which is your strongest skill today? IQ, EQ, or CQ?
Which one still needs more work?
