Out of time, strength, resources, support or ideas…
Have you ever been there?
I have. Several times.
I remember when I set out to divorce my crack/cocaine-addicted husband.
There were many nights I wasnβt sure how I was going to make it.
Then there have been times, that weren’t nearly as life-threatening, which felt just as intense and frightening.
Life Can Be Difficult
One that comes to mind was a job in technology sales. I was hired by corporate then sent to an office where I was one of the only women on the team.
At first, it didn’t bother me. Then I was told that the local management team did not want a female in the office. That made life tough.
There are many days, even in ministry, when things can get hurtful, rough and stressful in a hurry.
As pastors, David and I are called to walk through death, sickness, divorce, drug addiction, and abuse with our congregation members.
Some days, I find my hands up rubbing my head as a cesspool of negative emotions and thoughts flood my mind (at a momentβs notice). Iβm sure you can relate. Your job, kids, troubles, challenges…
I can feel that you are tracking right along with me.
We arenβt alone in our feelings of lack of, well… anything and everything.
The question is, how do we gain victory when it seems like we can’t take one more step?
How do we win when it feels like we’re finished?
These are difficult questions that people (even people in the Bible) have asked for thousands of years.
Let’s look to Gideon in the book of Judges.
Judges is an Old Testament book which tells about a violent, chaotic, dark period in Israel’s history. During this time, God raised up “judges,” or leaders, to deliver Israel when they cried out for relief.
Gideon was a farm hand. Living life, working hard.
He was not a leader, and he certainly was not climbing any corporate ladders. For seven years, he, like the rest of Israel at the time, allowed the enemy to come in and ravish the land.
The enemy killed everything in sight and left the people starving and crying out to God (Judges 6:1-6). When God heard the people’s cry, He spoke to Gideon,
Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midianβs hand. Am I not sending you? — Judges 6:14 (NIV)
But Gideon replied,
How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest… and I am the least in my family.” — Judges 6:15 (NIV)
I bolded and underlined certain words because I’m trying to make a point.
You see, God said, “Go.” He said, that He (God Himself) was sending him.
Because God was sending him, Gideon’s strength (or lack thereof) would be sufficient. God directed him to go “in the strength that he (Gideon) had.”
We donβt have to have the strength to get to the end. God gives that at just the right time so we donβt get all cocky and think we have this thing handled without Him. We are stupid enough to think that every now and then anyway.
If we listen to God by going when he says, “Go,” then we will be in a position for God to add his super to our natural.
Then like Gideon, we’ll discover that our little bitty, tiny ounce of strength is more than enough when the Creator of the universe is on our side.
Sounds easy, right? Not exactly.
You see, even though Gideon had been told that God was on his side, he still didn’t fully believe it.
Right after God tells him that He is with him, Gideon asked, “How can I save Israel?”
Fact is, if you’re reading this blog, then this probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard the words, “God is on your side.”
Even so, if you’re like most of us, then you probably get to thinking that you have to get through, whatever it is you’re going through, on your own.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
God is on your side. With Him and through Him, you are a conqueror.
Don’t let the enemy fool you into thinking that you’re weak or that you are the least.
With the Lord on your side, you are a mighty warrior. (Judges 6:12)
You are the head and not the tail. Surely goodness and mercy will follow you all of the days of your life.
So let’s try this again.
How do we gain victory when we’re in the middle of a dark, violent, chaotic moment in our life?
Here are five super simple ways to win and keep winning.
- Donβt quit.
- Donβt give up.
- Take God at His word.
- Believe that you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength.
- Trust that, no matter how impossible your present circumstance may appear, all things are possible with God.
You don’t have to do it alone. God is on your side.
In the same way that God turned Gideon, from the weakest person in the weakest family in Israel, to a national war hero, God has a plan to make your life victorious!
But you canβt quit.
You have to keep moving in the strength that you do have (however small).
Do what you can and know that God will do the rest.
Heβs got this…
Trust Him.
Thank you, Pastor Nicole for this timely msg in my hour & day. Just when I needed it. My situation involves a car & it isn’t resolved yet. God is faithful & I know the right people at the right time are coming into my life. I am self-sufficent in Christ sufficiency plus I’m a child of the King
Dear Pastor Nicole,
I have had so many breakthroughs over the past 2 + years….from victory over paralysis, strokes, kidney disease and high blood pressure. But as the visiting Pastor from Texas stated Sunday, I am “hearing God is stereo” now. There is a dream / calling on my life…and physically I am in a great deal of weakness and pain. The nerve-endings that ceased communicating are now “waking up,” and this process is very VERY painfull. I know the enemy wants me to quit. Please keep me in your prayers…that I DON’T quit….and that God recieves the glory when I get through this portion of this trial.
Kenneth – Prayer in action sir!
Darlene –
God has a plan and it is for good and not for evil to give you a future and a hope! I will believe with you!
Your story was really inmtifaorve, thanks!
You are very welcome! π
There have been a few VERY difficult times in my marriage where all I could do was call on God and trust He would help me walk through the valley. I know I havenβt gotten to where I am today by my power. He kept me moving forward when everything crumbled around me. He kept me standing when everything was against me, and that has always been the lesson He has tried to teach meβthat He is all I need.
David –
What an honest share. I believe God is with you – strengthening you and encouraging you to not quit! You can do all things through Christ!
Awesome! Just the words I needed at this moment…thank you!
Thank you Pastor Nicole for such encouraging words and message. My load already seems lighter just by reading your blog and feeling the compassion you share. This was just what I needed, right now, today.
Dear Pastor Nicole,
You have no idea how much you have blessed me. To know that God delivered you from your circumstances which were extremely similar to mine. God gave me that new husband but the enemy is throwing his best but will not succeed. Through this current dark time; I am trusting God, believing in Him. This blog has touched me and God has used you by posting this to give me more strength to go on yet another day waiting for God’s glory to be manifested through this situation. Thank you so much!!

Lots of Love from Miami, Your sister in Christ, Hazel
Again, AWESOME!!! Love you, Pastor Nicole!!!
Thank you Pastor Nicole I really needed that message today. I deal with alot on a dialy basis for e.g. raising my 12 year old daughter by myself, trying to go back to school, working as a nusrse, and taking care of a house. Its hard but I will never give up…..I am the daugheter of a King.
Yes you are Dana! And don’t forget it π
I hope I can help remind you of how precious you are to your Father in Heaven!
Thank you Pastor Nicole! Such a simple message but yet so hard sometimes to do! This is a great reminder today!
Reading this through many tears was hard but I want to say thank you for this post which hits home something fierce. Lately I though and said out loud I wanted to give up, but you have told me one on one that when it’s the hardest not to give up cause I could miss my breakthrough, your words were so much needed.
In 2009 our home was going under foreclosure and while making dinner I heard in my spirit “your not going to loose your house, I told Don and we waited to see what happened. About a few weeks during worship at church I told God “pastor Dave says if you fix God’s house he’ll take care of yours, well I said this to God and I heard in my spirit again “I told you your not going to loose your house” Don and I kept our faith and prayed with many friends and day by day we saw God lead the right people into our path and were in our home today.
God is so faithful and this is our one time we trusted God.

What a great testimony to God’s goodness! Amazing!
Thanks for this great message about endurance/perseverance, and then surrendering the rest to God. My S.O.P. is ” get it done; accomplish; stick to my To Do List; etc… Well, although I can appreciate that I am relentless & energetic, God is showing me that I am too self-reliant. I am moving from: ” This situation ( fill in the blank), is too overwhelming, therefore I try harder or just conclude it’s hopeless; To: “OK GOD this situation (fill in the blank), is out of control, impossible, so I am not sure how YOU are going to handle this, I’m just going to wait and see how YOU handle this, and rest on your promises and soverignty.” Suffice to say, this is a huge shift for me!! I want to continue to Let GOD be GOD.
My friend told me about you just a few days ago, and I checked out your website. You remind me of me —even physically, and I pray that my faith and passion for God will be my priority, as it is for you and your husband.
It’s a joy to know you & to witness how God redeemed and restored your life. Your life reminds me of a great verse in Isaiah 61, ” I will give you beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning…”
Thank you for reminding me of what I already know but have a habit of forgetting. As I write this, I’m going through a time in my life where my marriage is falling apart and divorce has been brought up by both of us. The truth is, I’m not sure I have the fight in me any more to try and save a half dead and still dying marriage. I have turned it over to God and decided it’s his will that will have to suffice because mine alone isn’t great enough. I love that God loves us and wants to be here for us and I’m glad I have you and Pastor David to remind me of that!

Angie –
And He loves you SO!!!!
Great words!! My wife had complications on both of our children and theonlt thing I could do was trust God. I will never forget the nurse telling me “you cant do anything for her now”, so I prayed and just trusted God. Thankfully they are all safe and sound!!!!

It is awesome serving a God that can and does do things when we cannot!
Love this! God enjoys being with us through every situation, good or bad. π
I loved what you said that we are the head not the tail, and followed by surely goodness and mercy will FOLLOW us, God is on all our sides, pushing us from behind when needed too, and picking up the pieces we somehow drop or fail to pick up. Oh I so needed to hear these words. Thank yo.
Bonnie –
I love how you pointed out that He picks up the pieces! How true. And then He puts them where they are supposed to be π
Pastor Nicole,
Copied and posted this blog, strong truth in the midst of the darkenss. The light always superceeds
Thank you for the truth, encouragment and tools to grow and cultivate the relationship that God has planned with him through his word. Changing lives π
Shine –
Thanks so much for the copy and paste!!!!!!
π
Thank you so much Pastor Nicole. I can sure tell you are being led by God.
you always seem to blog about things I am going through at the time. My time in which I had to trust God, is when Jason was born, they believed there were serious problems going on with him. So I fasted and prayed like I’ve never prayed before. Praise God I believed in Him instead of the doctors. It was very easy not to quit on your children. I just have to remember that now in my life Jesus is calling me to not quit on myself, or what He tells me to do.
Your a Blessing to me Pastor Nicole!
Lori –
Teaming with God in fasting and prayer is the perfect plan!!!! You were led!
Great word of encouragement Pastor Nicole! There is no quitting in the plan of God! Thank you!
Great point Omar! And in His plan – we win!
WoW! Thanks Pastor Nicole. What an awesome message. I love you so much! π What an awesome Woman of God you are and I love how he uses you. sigh…………….. and smilin. π
You are precious Shelly!
Pastor Nicole;
I have been putting my trust in God for the past two years regarding my boyfriend who is a recovering drug addict. He has been clean for three years now and I know he cares about me but he is having difficulty with fear (of love, failure, commitment, success, relapse, etc) so our relationship has been somewhat like a roller coaster. Everytime our relationship goes down into the valley I put my trust in God and we end up climbing back up the mountain together. We are down in the valley again now but my faith in God will get me through and I pray that God will heal him and remove his fear as I know He can do.
Awesome wording Miss Nicole! I love it when tough ideas are broken down into a very simple form! This is a God given gift that you possess. :0)
Thank you for everything you do.
Thanks Shay π
