Honor. Do we know what honor is these days? I think there might be a misperception.
Honoring someone doesn’t show who THEY are as much as it shows who YOU are. Similarly, forgiveness isn’t for the other person as much as it is for you.
God tells us to honor our Father and Mother (Exodus 20:12). Do we even realize what this means?
What Is Honor?
Respect. Deference. Reverence. Consideration. High regard. To view favorably. Favor. Celebrate. Distinguish. Value. To accept and acknowledge personal responsibility for one’s actions.
Why Don’t We Honor?
I think the reason we don’t honor is similar to why we don’t forgive. We think the other person doesn’t deserve it. The problem with that logic is that it is not just for the other people, it’s for US!
Honoring another (especially when they might not seem to deserve it) shows more for our own character, integrity, and self-esteem than that of the other person.
The Choice
King David chose to honor Saul (God’s anointed) even though Saul harassed David on and off for over 10 years. Saul tried to kill David so many times it’s not even funny. And David worked for Saul! David was a manly man, a warrior, he could have easily killed Saul, but he chose not to. Why? Because he had honor, so he showed honor.
He knew that God said, “Do Not Touch My Anointed Ones; Do My Prophets No Harm.” (Psalm 105:15)
Look At It Differently
I’d like to encourage you that if you love God, you want to obey him and you are unsure who his “anointed” ones are, then honor everyone.
Let’s bring honor back!
