Did I Seriously Just Say That?
A little while ago, David and I had a day off. At last! I was really looking forward to just walking, shopping, eating, and having a great time together.
Kid-free, work-free, worry-free, holding hands, and almost giddy… we were laughing and having so much fun! It kinda felt like we were on a first date, again.
Then IT happened.
Our completely innocent conversation somehow opened an old wound. (It can be brought on by a text, an email, or even a random thought.)
Comments came pouring out of me… starting with phrases like:
- No way!
- You’ve got to be kidding me!
- I can’t believe it!
- How could they?
Oooops! Did I really just SAY that?
Before I knew it, our sunshiny, silly, happy day had been hijacked by the words of my mouth and a SINGLE runaway thought.
Suddenly, we’d lost all our joy and the mood dropped faster than the stock market!
Oh NO!!! How did I let this happen? (Even pastors make mistakes.)
Thankfully, I immediately recognized that I’d messed up and had to make an emergency U-turn… because God says to “count it all joy!”
“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” James 1:2-3 (NLT)
One stupid random thought, expressed in words, had steered the ship of our day in the wrong direction. Not just for me – but, for BOTH of us!
Stop! Don’t let the enemy steal your joy! Constantly guard your mind and think about what you’re thinking about.
Be ready to snuff out any bad thoughts BEFORE they ever have the chance to become a spoken word.
