Mike Matheny is a WINNER….and he has four “Gold Glove” trophies as catcher to prove it!
But in 2007, as the result of a string of bad concussions, he was forced to retire from baseball.
He was just 36 years old.
With a wife and five kids to support, he had a solid backup plan in the form of real estate investments.
Then in 2008, the market totally collapsed and he LOST EVERYTHING!
Down…But Not Out
With his playing career over, his life’s savings wiped out even the family’s dream home would have to be sold just to pay off debts.
That’s a tough pill to swallow, especially for a winner who had HONORED God all his life and signed every autograph with “John 3:16” below his name.
Winners Never Quit!
Well, if you follow baseball then you already know the rest of this story.
“For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again…” Proverbs 24:16 (NIV)
A few years ago, Mike Matheny got his “dream job” as the new manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
It’s Who We Are
Winning is not something we occasionally DO. Being a WINNER is who we ARE!
There are those who say they CAN’T, and those who say they CAN.
Both of them are absolutely RIGHT!
Which kind are WE going to be?
Amen Amen Amen Amen. Praise God. I stand on those scriptures. Great story. God is so awesome.
Believing what we want to be even when we don’t see how it can be is the most awesome thing as it allows God to come and show up in amazing ways to help me get there. Great reminder.
Love reading your blog. Very inspirational as are you in person. I haven’t been able to get to church due to some issues we are having. I miss it very much and I feel like I am one of those winners that has fallen but will eventually get back up and thrive. Thank you for the encouragement.
