Ashtyn (bless her heart) tries her best to give me advice. She tells me how to drive, what to wear—and NOT wear, and how to cook. But I don’t mind. She’s just a teenager!
It’s not quite so entertaining when grownups act the same way as my 16-year-old daughter. The fact is, most of us don’t like “know-it-alls.”
If you’re under the age of 25, then you’re more likely to THINK you know stuff. (Don’t take that the wrong way. We’ve all been there.)
It’s like that bumper sticker that says, “Hire a teenager while they still know EVERYTHING!” Lol
This I realize — the OLDER I get — the LESS I know!
Even so, there are still times when I find myself talking TOO MUCH. Does that ever happen to you?
What is that stinkin’ impulse that tells us we already KNOW everything the other person is going to say?
And even though they’re still TALKING… right now is a good time to start figuring out what we’re going to say, back. So we just stop listening.
I would love to tell you I’ve outgrown this quirk — but I haven’t. Even with a conscious effort to talk LESS and listen MORE—I still catch myself chiming in when it’s not necessary.
The Book of Proverbs has a ton of verses about the wisdom of a little less talk and a lot more LISTENING.
Think about THIS…
We already know everything WE know.
So — if we want to keep growing, we need to learn what OTHER people know, by giving them our full attention. (Make sense?)
That’s a whole lot of “shut your pie hole” for us! ☺
